To bring common sense and real wisdom back into developing people. I believed in my heart that what I was previously exposed to as people development was extremely ineffective. For work of this kind to be really effective it had to be real, and based on something more substantial.
I recently ran a programme with NEPS(National Educational Psychological Services). At the end of the last session, one of the participants walked up to me and said: “Brian, after 40 years working as a psychologist, I’m finally retiring. And what I’m taking with me now as I go, I learnt from your programmes”.
The thing I love most is when I see people discovering and making changes for themselves. It's when I see people becoming free.
When I was in my 20’s I decided to learn to fly light aircraft. I had my first solo flight on the 17th of August 1978, and I clocked up 200 hours nationally and internationally as pilot in command. Also, I grew up in Australia, but no one would know because I fought hard to keep my Irish accent!
To ground the development of people in real wisdom and to make it available as widely as possible.
The common ‘task first’ approach will at best produce efficiency. A people first approach will produce excellence. We have to focus on our people. The question is: Do we want to be efficient or excellent?
